This session explores eight research-supported principles (Chandler et al., 2025) that should guide spelling instruction in classrooms and intervention settings. Participants examine what decades of research reveal about how students learn spellings, why some approaches produce stronger outcomes than others, and how spelling supports broader literacy development. Practical examples show how these principles inform instructional decisions regardless of curriculum or grade level.
Effective spelling instruction does not require longer word lists, more worksheets, or another Friday test. It requires brief, explicit, high-impact routines that help students connect sounds, spellings, meanings, and words in memory. Participants learn a set of 15–20 minute routines distilled from research on spelling intervention and orthographic learning, and leave with practices they can use immediately to strengthen spelling, word reading, and writing.

Words get longer after second grade, so spelling shifts to bigger units. This focus centers orthographic and morphologically based spelling routines for multisyllabic words.
Many upper-elementary, middle, and high school students struggle to access grade-level texts because they have not mastered decoding and recognition of multisyllabic and morphologically complex words. This session bridges early literacy instruction and the advanced word-reading and spelling skills older students need.
As students move into the upper-elementary and middle grades, writing becomes the bridge between thinking and communicating. This session blends practical foundational-skills routines with strategies grounded in Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD).
Many states now require early dyslexia and reading screening, but screening results too often fail to translate into meaningful support. This session helps educators and leaders move from compliance to impact, drawing on current dyslexia legislation, federal law, and implementation science research.
This session guides educators through Data-Based Individualization (DBI) to intensify literacy intervention for students with dyslexia who are slow or non-responsive to evidence-based programs. Participants leave with a replicable decision-making framework for designing and refining intensive intervention within special education (Tier 3).
Every fee below is a starting point. Final pricing reflects scope, format, and travel, and I always work to make it fit schools and nonprofits.
For in-person events, travel and lodging are billed separately at cost. Larger audiences and multi-day institutes are quoted individually. Multiple sessions at the same event are bundled at a reduced rate. School and nonprofit budgets are always welcome. If something is close but the budget is tight, tell me and we will find a fit.
